Papua New Guinea Waghi Valley

Papua New Guinea Waghi Valley

Grown in the Western Highlands of Wahgi Valley in Papua New Guinea by smallholder farmers alongside a variety of other crops on 1 or 2 hectare “gardens”, this coffee is then delivered to a centralized mill before being sorted and processed. Sourcing in Papua New Guinea poses many unique challenges, as the country’s many indigenous people groups are very distinct from one another, both in language and in culture, with some communities only comprising several hundred people. This makes communication and the cultural sensitivity needed to do business here much more difficult than the majority of coffee producing countries, but the end result is worth it, as coffee produced here is truly unique.

This lot from the Waghi Valley region is sweet and spicy, with complex flavors of molasses, dates, and cinnamon balanced with a syrupy body and tart acidity.

Aroma: cinnamon, dates
Flavor: molasses, graham, dried papaya
